THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL is a film for anyone who has ever doubted whether life truly begins at 60. Oscar-nominated director John Madden has cherry-picked some of the very best British actors for this bittersweet but ultimately life-affirming comedy-drama.
We open in downcast Britain, where we meet an assortment of pensioners (played by Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy among others) each with their own grudge against modern living and who are not exactly making the most of their golden years.
What they need is a change of scenery. Fate obliges in the form of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a majestic retirement home in India that is looking for new residents following a renovation. After jumping at the chance to start afresh in sunnier climes, our sagacious gang have second thoughts when their destination turns out to be more crumbling ruin than palatial sanctuary.
Following the 4.30 screening on Sunday 26 February, the author of the novel on which the film is based, Deborah Moggach, will be at The Gate to answer your questions.
