Woody Allen's 14th film as writer/director begins and ends with Thanksgiving dinners in Manhattan apartments.
In between it weaves an intricate pattern of family relationships between New York actress Hannah (Mia Farrow), sisters Lee (Barbara Hershey) and Holly (Dianne Wiest), and assorted husbands, ex-husbands, lovers, parents and friends.
Before a neatly circular and satisfying ending, each character undergoes a significant emotional ordeal, not least Hannah's ex-husband: neurotic, hypochondriac TV producer Mickey (Allen), whose comic grapplings with the meaning of life, love, death and the universe provide a wry perspective on the affairs of others.
Funny, wise, melancholy and tender, this is the film that initiated a new phase in the career of America's most indisputable and distinctive auteur.
