Synopsis

Michael Winterbottom, a director known and admired for the great diversity of his films (THE KILLER INSIDE ME, THE ROAD TO GUANTANAMO), puts an exotic twist on Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles - his third Hardy adaptation after JUDE and THE CLAIM.

Riz Ahmed (FOUR LIONS) stars as affluent young British businessman Jay Singh, who journeys to India to help run his father's chain. Along the way he meets Trishna (Pinto, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE), a beautiful young woman desperately seeking a way out of her impoverished surroundings.

When she starts working for Jay, the two fall in love, but conflicting social pressures soon threaten to halt their fledgling romance.
